| My GGG grandfather, Thomas Deacon, lived in Faringdon in the early
1800s, he was a publican/innkeeper, having two children born at Faringdon, one
in 1814 and second in 1816.Both baptised at All Saints Church. Elizabeth Deacon and John Deacon. Would anyone know if there is any records of public houses/inns at Faringdon during this period. His son(born1816)was named John and was to become a shoemaker(cordwainer) who later moved to Gloucester, Birmingham and Tewksbury. any help would be greatfully received. | I lived in Faringdon from 1970 - 77. I was five when we moved
there to No.5 Gravel Walk. I went to the infants school, then the junior and
did one term at Tollington. I have a friend who lives in Stanford in the Vale,
so I do get to visit now and then. I was shocked to see my Junior School is now
a housing estate - as is the field where I used to play at the back of my
house!! I'd loved to hear from anyone I used to know who is still in the area.
I have a lot of fond memories of my childhood there. I live and work in
Hertford now as a Community Support Worker in Mental Health. Debbie Loveridge djloveridge@btinternet.com 28/05/08 |

| Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me. My husband's mother came
from Faringdon or Wantage, both places were mentioned. My husband's mother was
called Frances Eileen Tucker she was born in 1924 ish and died with
influenza/childbirth in 1957. She had brothers and sisters and my husband has
fond memories of visiting his grandmother (he was 8 when his mother died (in
Scotland). My husband has a brother who was 5 when his mum died. They lost
contact for reasons they do not know but would love to meet their aunts or
uncles cousins etc. My husband still has his mother's handbag intact from the
day she died in 1957 including wartime photographs of her friends etc and
letters and post cards from his grandmother to his mother (one from Didcot).
Please please if anyone can remember a family from either Wantage or Faringdon
called Tucker (may have owned a nursery garden) please contact us. We would be
very grateful. Thank you. Anne Kelly. annie.kelly1@btinternet.com 24/05/08 |

| I am looking forward to my first visit to Faringdon at the end of
April. My dear Grandfather, Francis Rickards Dyke (aka Charles), was born here
in 1892. He and his family lived at Coxwell House Estate in Little Coxwell. His
parents were George John Dyke, an auctioneer, and Cordelia Gerring. I'd like to
know where they are buried. Cordelia died about the year 1938. Are there any
Gerrings who would like to respond? I recall hearing my grandfather speak of
Mary Gerring (current age 57 to 60 ). Marilyn Boyd Canada marboyd@nb.sympatico.ca 16/03/08 |

| Hi beautiful Faringdon from the beautiful Blue Mountains in
Australia. I am trying to trace information on my birth father Beau Welford who
died 1.4.1974 aged 58, and is buried in Faringdon with his wife Hilda who died
in March 1990. I know I have 2 half sisters and a half brother (maybe named
Jeanette, Susanne and Terry or something similar?)who used to live in
Faringdon. One of them ran a small supermarket there in 1974/75. I visited
Faringdon in 2007 and found my fathers grave, but did not have time to track
down any relatives. I loved the town and I would love to be in contact with
family and explore some of my fathers family tree. Please contact me at my
email address. Pauline Ashby (nee Welford) Australia paulaashby@optusnet.com.au 05/01/08 |

| My family lived in Gloucester Street in the house that had a
cottage in the garden. I think in the 1960s. Does anyone remember? Ive heard that it is now a nursery or private school. My family have memories to add to the social history of the place. There were connections to a pub there and someone called- we think Richard- who was a lodger. A family member would love to visit the family home and show us around and tell us their memoirs -which could link with yours. There were international connections. I would love to hear from anyone that remembers. The cottage in the garden as far as we know now has a garage door in it! Sad but true. Any info my family would love as we are researching our history. Rossalyn Emmett emmerossal@btinternt.com |

Coventry) - my father was David Carter (I know little about his family) and my
mother was Eileen Jones, whose maternal relatives were the Lees. She was a

mine. We shared a love of music - I remember sightreading through her piano

| I went to Tollington School from 1969-74. I was looking up the old school on Google earth and was surprised by how many extra buildings the old place now has. Of course in my day Tollington was a secondary modern school. My dyslexia meant that i missed out on attending K.A. at Wantage which was one of the best schools in the country back then. Despite being under funded Tollington still managed to provide a pretty good education. Thankfully these days the old school is a comprehensive and so funding is I suppose less of an issue. We were the first of the R.O.S.L.A. children and that defines my year better than any other single factor. I was in Barrington house. I would love to hear from any other people from my year or for than matter any year that remembers me. Did you know that Tollington was the first school in Oxfordshire to have a computer terminal, it was a great beast of a machine that connected to the R.M.C.S. and in that respect I am grateful to the school as we were one of the very first groups of Children in England to have a decent Computer Science course. Of the Teachers I remember and am most grateful to Mrs Jones (nee Evens) who encouraged me to write despite my word blindness a really good teacher who I admit I had a massive crush on. | Hello, I shall remember Faringdon for all the wrong reasons... At about 4.30am, 16th January, just outside the village of Clanfield I foolishly stopped my car to pick up a hitchiker. As soon as he got to my car, another appeared from nowhere and got in the back seat. They wanted to go to Faringdon. As luck would have it I was headed there en route to Southampton. They claimed to have walked from Oxford and had been on foot since 11.30pm. These two young men were about 17-20 years old. One, black hair, about 5'8", distinctive gap on eyebrow, possibly youngest of the two, sat in the passengers seat. The other taller possibly a little older, fair hair, quiet, too quiet, didn't say a word, in the back seat. Both dressed in 'generic' attire. Dropped them off near a pub (The Ship, I think) since that was close to where one of them lived, with mum. The fair-headed one got out the car too quickly and just as they got out of sight seconds later I realised what he'd done and discovered the theft. So, what I'd like to say is... I am so glad I was able to save you another 4 or 5 miles walk. Thank you for briefly depriving me of my tobacco tin, sorry I didn't leave any papers in there for you, or the lighter. You missed the mobile phone though, the wallet as well! Sloppy work! Such cynicism cannot go unrewarded. So, I shall fondly remember you both for being the last ever hitchikers I stop to pick up, I'll think of you every time I see someone, someone probably more deserving than you, hoping for a lift. | G'Day from Trunkey Creek, Australia. I used to work at Barclays Bank in Faringdon in 1967-9. I have happy memories of my workmates there. I used to eat lunches at a B&B or boarding house run by a Mrs Nicholls. (Her daughter also worked in the Bank). I can remember many a late night in winter waiting in the Market square for my bus home to Swindon cos I'd missed my usual bus, - a cold and lonely place after dark. I emigrated to Australia in '69. Love to hear from anyone who might remember me. It's good to see Faringdon On-line Cooee! By the way, in my village (Trunkey Creek, population 50) we really DO have Kangaroos and wombats wandering in the main street! Barry Cubitt Australia barrycubitt@yahoo.com.au 20/07/06 |

| Please can you tell me if there is a way to forward this message to
the Faringdon History Society by e-mail? I am the great-grandaughter of a
Buscot girl (Mary Clark) who, in 1879, at the age of 22, married a young man
from Colchester, Essex, where she then lived out the rest of her life.
According to her Birth and Marriage Certificates, Mary's father's name was
James Clark, a Coal Merchant. Her mother was named Harriet nee Ryman. Presuming
that James Clark's business was located in Buscot (at least at the time of
Mary's birth in 1857), is there any way that I can find out more about him and
his family? For example, what was their address in Buscot, did they have other
children, when was James born, where was he living when Mary was married in
1879, when did James die, etc. I live in Vancouver, Canada, so researching
these things is not so easy from here! With many thanks! Erica M. Westley Canada ericaw01@shaw.ca 16/06/05 |

Grandfather. In 1922 we know that he lived in Station Road, Faringdon and was occupied as a Timber Carter. Did he work for the sawmills which I understand was in Station Road and was originally Butts Rd.? Please can anyone tell me who ran the sawmill business in those days and where exactly was it? Is there a town map showing Station Road, Butts Road and Old Sawmills Road? David Bradfield david.bradfield2@btinternet.com |

| I'm sure there will be a lot of people remembering Mrs Allnatt,
when we were children she was always there with words of wisdom and a good
ticking off if we deserved it! My dad always took my son for a walk "up the
folly" and Mrs Allnatt's was always the first port of call. In latter years she
lived in Swindon (Stratton to be exact) I hadn't seen her for a long while as I
have been living in Essex and now S. Glos but we always exchanged Christmas
cards. A lovely lady. I can't recall Jean Allnatt but knew some of her husbands family and of course her own family I knew, I went to school with her nephew Johny Phillips, who also lived in London Street. I could reminisce for England. I visit the Faringdon web site often and thoroughly enjoy it, the pictures from the crane were brilliant, congratulations on such a good site. I never want to forget my roots. Margaret Haddon UK maggiehaddon20802@tesco.net 08/02/05 |

| I have learnt over this last weekend 5th Feb. that Mrs Allnatt
(her of sweet shop fame) has passed away. I would like through your guest book
to offer my condolences to her family. Those of us now in our 50's from
Goodlake Avenue, Bennett Road, Pye Street, etc. grew up knowing this lady, she
saw our children grow and she knew of my grandson although never met him. I
think she deserves a mention on your web site, bless her, she sold the best
sweets. Margaret (nee Rogers) Margaret Haddon UK maggiehaddon20802@tesco.net 07/02/05 |

| Hello Faringdon from Queensland Australia. I have just found out
for sure that my gg Grandma, Martha DAVIS was born in Faringdon 25 November
1817. Her father William DAVIS was a baker who married Martha TURNER in All
Saints 30 December 1811. Does anyone know anything about this family? I would
love to know something of their life in Faringdon. My GG Grandma Martha DAVIS
came to Victoria Australia in 1844 & married here. Hoping someone can help
me. Elizabeth McMurdy Australia mcmurdy_adsl@hotkey.net.au 04/02/05 |

| Salutations Faringdon,my Mum and Dad used to have the Gardeners
Arms,a pub that is now flats next to a Church,(1955-57) which I understand is
now a parking lot.My Dad George Edward Church and my Mum Vera Ellen Church have
now passed away and so has my sister Joan and her husband, she left 6 children.
They all lived in New Zealand after leaving the UK,the older folks will
probobly remember the two red-headed girls who lived in the rowdey pub that was
always full of "yanks"- Mary and Joan- My Grandparents are buried in the
Graveyard of the Church in Great Coxwell,I was born in the council houses, my
first job was at the Great Barn when it was a chicken farm collecting eggs and
cleaning in the big house. My youngest brother Michael visited Faringdon twice
and ran into June a school mate of mine from Shrivringham ? to her I say
"Hello". I was a head girl at the Faringdon school but my name was not put on
the board, guess the head master didn't like me winking at the boys when I was
on corridor duty(smile) I think a cousin of mine still lives in Marlborow
Gardens, a red headed fellow who once lived in Princes Risborough, his Father
was my Uncle Vic,also I would like to say Hi to the family of my deceased Uncle
Len. Our familys roots are in the Faringdon area being also connected to the
King family,my Father never stopped recalling the days of running the Gardeners
Arms, driving a taxi service and being the ambulance too all at the same time.He
told me many stories about the people who lived and worked in Faringdon,
including the one who came to town pushing a wheel barrow and set up shop and
eventually owned most of the stores(you know who you are)by the way thanks for
the ride in your truck from London. I have lived all over the world since then,
now am in California,I notice on this site that there are a number of the
Faringdon Girls live quite close to me (Merced)get in touch if you want to.
Hope to take a stroll down memory lane one day,I did enjoy this site,a real
blast from the past. Mary Elizabeth Church California USA maryelmytg@aol.com 01/12/04 |

| Hi My name is Terry White, I was born in Fernham in 1936, in the
cottage on the green opposite Fernham church, and the village pump(as my mother
was before me in 1908) I think its now called "Corner Cottage" it belonged to
my grandparent Granny Brown a very well known figure locally. I went to both
Longcot and Little Coxwell junior schools, and of course Faringdon secodary
modern before moving to london around the age of fifteen. I have managed to
remain in contact with a few families still living around Faringdon and the
local area but I would still like to find out if anyone remembers me from those
days. I started school around 1941 and finnished at Faringdon about 1950. Names
of my contemprories were: Henry Lovegrove, from Fernham Lorna Wootton from
Watchfield, who,s father was a friend of my cousin in law Bert Hicks, his name
was also Bert if I remember correctly. I revisited many old haunts during the
eighties with my country band HOBO we regularly played the club in the square
and the corn exchange, and i met quite a few folks who remembered the old times
particularly during the war of course. A lot of names I remember as I read your
many wonderful e-mails from around the world. My family were named mainly Brown
and Richens, I know there must be a lot of the latter as two of my cousins the
late Bill and Harold Richens remained in Fernham and Faringdon respectively all
there lives. Bills father who died on return from the first world war lies in
the front of Fernham churchyard right next to the wall with a army gravestone.
I hope this may stir a few memories and maybe tempt a reply or two, many thanks
for the website keep up the good work Yours with best regards, Terry White Terry White England thw3013@hotmail.com 26/10/04 |

the Crown Hotel in Faringdon in the late 70's.....in fact we bought it when it
had been closed for some years following a major fire and slowly opened most of
the hotel up prior to moving on to Broadway. It would be good to hear from any
of the many friends both staff and customers we made during our time at the
Crown. Many happy times especially rugby with the guys from the Military
colllege in Shriv, John Lane at the Woodman, Fernham (who I understand has now
sadly passed away) and who could forget those nights at the Bell and Wing
Commander Harry & Pearl Stratton. On the subject of the latter i would love

| Hello Faringdon from Ontario Canada. I was born in Reading and
raised in Harwell.I lived with my grandfather Dr Richard Rice. When the house
in Harwell was sold, I was lucky enough to save some old documents, among them
was a morgage on a house on Bull St in Faringdon. It is dated 1844, and is
about 2 feet high and 3 feet wide. It appears to be drawn up by a gentleman
named Wayne possibly a local lawyer. It is not of much interest to me, but I
was wondering if someone from Faringdon might put me in touch with a person who
should have this document. Ross Viner. Ross Viner Canada r_bviner@nexicom.net 20/07/04 |

| Having left Faringdon seven years ago I was both delighted and
amazed to see how the town had grown and changed during that time. We lived in
Gravel Walk for almost seventeen years and really, very little changed during
that period, so I think that I expected things to be the same when I found the
website. Not so!! Although the boundaries seem to have expanded and many more
houses have been built in the area, Faringdon still seems to have retained the
rustic charm that so appealed to us when we first moved there. We now live in a
really rural area in SW France, which we love, but still remember Faringdon
fondly and keep in touch with some very good friends there. It would be nice to
hear from old acquaintances, so drop us an e-mail should you feel like getting
in touch! Wendy & Arthur McDowall. Wendy McDowall France wendymcdowall@aol.com 18/07/04 |

| Hello. I was surprised to find such an extensive and well arranged website for a small town, and obviously a deservedly proud little town. On the map it appeared quite small next to Wantage which has only about 18000 residents. I was disappointed only in the lack of more pictures of your beautiful community. I am in Brunswick, Ohio, a suburb of Cleveland with a population of about 32000 people. We have much new construction, and seemingly everywhere here in the states we have a severe problem with "SPRAWL". Cities are constantly being expanded by dividing adjacent farmland for large housing developments. We have new developments everywhere it seems. I was told my grandmother was born in Wantage, in 1863 and have been trying to research her origin with little success. Though I probably will never get to Wantage or England, I am getting some feeling for how present life is 'over there'. I think your lifestyle and country are impressively refined and beautiful. I would like to find a local internet bulletin board with contributors that are southern Oxfordshire if there is one. Perhaps someone will let me know of one. Best wishes to all William C. Would someone in Faringdon please be good enough to help me with some information about an ancestor. I believe that there is a monument in the All Saints Church at Faringdon in memory of Cecily BULSTRODE/UNTON/KELLOWAY. BULSTRODE was the maiden name, UNTON and KELLOWAY were her married names. Her last marriage was to Robert KELLOWAY in about 1553. I would be very grateful if someone would have a look at the church and locate the monument, and let me know what the inscription says. My great-grandfather Richard AYRES was born about 1847 in Shellingford, and educated in Faringdon. His parents were George AYRES and Elizabeth LOCKEY. According to information I have, George AYRES worked as a gamekeeper on the estate of a Captain BUTLER in the Faringdon area. In 1873 Richard AYRES married Ellen SMITH [dau.of John SMITH] and in 1880, with their two children Annie and Wilfred, they emigrated to New Zealand on the "Maraval". Richard AYRES was a lay preacher in the Methodist Church, and lived in Faringdon and Swindon. In NZ he worked as a Herblist and Botanical chemist, owning his own business, having learned about natural medicines and herbal remedies from his mother Elizabeth, nee LOCKEY. I believe he had siblings who also lived in the area. If you know anything about the people mentioned here, or think you may be related, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Sylvia Meade Australia CORINNE2@bigpond.com 02/10/2001 This is a message of thanks to the people of Faringdon, just for being there... I am from Swindon, my wife from Los Angeles. We landed in England on September 11 from San Francisco to start our holiday at a farm in Coleshill. Just hours later, news of the atrocities in the United States came though. For several days we were in a state of shock, despair, and helplessness. On the Friday we were in Faringdon when we found out the 3-minute silence was about to take place. We spent this time in All Saints' Church and only then began to recover and regain the perspective that had been driven out by the horror of the attacks. Life and hope, in the form of a tiny baby crying in the silence, indeed goes on. For the first time since the attacks, the dreadful images of crashing planes and falling buildings were taken away from our eyes and replaced with visions of a little new life crying out. The vicar stopped my wife on the way out and kindly offered her condolences. The mother of the young baby tried to apologise, but we all said no, the baby's crying was perfect and just what we needed. Then we found a tea shop on the corner where the normalities of daily life, talking to kind strangers over coffee, asking "mine host" about local points of interest, started to come back. On the following Sunday we were leaving for Kent and stopped by the church again, intending to spend a couple of minutes in quiet contemplation, to find a service just beginning. Even though we are not churchgoers, didn't know where to sit, and most of all didn't know the prayers and hymns, we were made most welcome and felt much better for the experience. Once again, thank you: Faringdon people were especially kind and Faringdon is now a special place to us. We will always have these memories. Hi! It's a wet afternoon in Sydney...yes we do have them. I tripped over this website and have spent an enjoyable interlude remembering Faringdon where I lived from 1952 to 1966. Since that time, other than a brief stint back in Britain, I lived in New Zealand, the States(Detroit) and predominantly Australia. My best wishes to anyone who knows me from that era and regards to everyone associated with this site for an excellent production. Andy Gebbie Australia gebbie@bigpond.net.au 27/08/2001 WELL DONE!!
