Tell us your priorities for improving Oxfordshire’s bus services- 9/4/24
The Oxfordshire Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) sets out our key ambitions for improving the local bus network and how Oxford county council and bus companies will work in partnership to deliver them.
Oxfordshire were successful in receiving over £14m of BSIP funding from the Department for Transport to deliver improvements between April 2022 and March 2025. This funding is going towards a number of projects from large scale bus priority measures in Oxford, to new bus services and discounted travel, for example £1 bus fares on Sundays in December. Please see our webpage(External link) for further information.
We are updating our BSIP this summer which will include proposals beyond March 2025. There is no guarantee of any further government funding being available, however we are excited about the opportunity this presents and want to ensure that our updated Improvement Plan reflects the views of Oxfordshire residents and those visiting or working in the county.
Let us know your views
To help us develop and update the plan we're keen to hear from people who already use buses and also from those who currently don’t. We also want to hear from public, private and voluntary organisations who have an interest in making our bus services work better.
Your views will help us shape the BSIP particularly for plans beyond March 2025.
The deadline for responses is 11.59 pm on Sunday 14th April.Click Survey to tell us your views

Faringdon Town Tour - 2/4/24
April 6th 10.30 - 11.30
Faringdon has a rich and fascinating history from mention in the Domesday Book through the Middle Ages, as a Royalist stronghold in the Civil War and, from the 1930s to 1950s, home to the eccentric Lord Berners. All these stories are set upon a unique geology that has been an important crossroads where the east and west from London to Bristol crossed the road from Coventry to Southampton and westwards to Gloucester. There really is something for everyone - fossils, battles, quirky signs and even pink pigeons.
Buscot & Coleshill Estate volunteers are supporting the local town of Faringdon with their town tour. Tours will take place on the first Saturday of the month from April to October.
Meet at 10:30 by the Old Town Hall, Faringdon, SN7 7HU. The guided tour takes 45 minutes to an hour. The tour is on flat ground with some inclines and curbs.
Parking – there are car parks a short walking distance from the town centre

National Trust Coleshill. News and events - 29/3/24
Spring is officially the start of the visitor season for National Trust West Oxfordshire. It’s so nice to see the sun and have longer days. The wildlife across the Buscot & Coleshill Estate is also benefitting from some warmth. The blossom is bursting into life and the birds are in full song. We recently welcomed a group of students from Crowdy’s Hill School, Swindon, volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award. A group of the students cleared the village community orchard, giving it a good tidy and making it a welcome place to enjoy. One student developed a talent for book related crafts to create beautiful displays in the bookshop. Those that have visited the bookshop will know our volunteers do a fantastic job. They have all worked hard and it has been a pleasure to help them achieve their awards.
Everyone is looking forward to the first Coleshill Village Open Day of the year on Sunday 14th April. The farm tour guides have been researching the history of Home Farm at Coleshill to add even more interesting facts into the story, the bunker has been spruced up and the project to get the mill running is under way – come and see the progress. An addition for this year’s Open Days is group walks through the parkland. Led by volunteer walk leaders, these gentle, relaxed walks will give you a chance to experience the nature around Coleshill. After the success of farm tours at last year’s Open Days, there are now bookable farm tours on Thursdays and Saturdays from April 18th in addition the Open Day tours.
Open Days take place on 14 April, 12 May, 9 June, 14 July and 11 August, 2-5pm.
If you like local history, why not sign up for a guided tour of Faringdon town. A group of National Trust volunteers have been working with Faringdon expert, Mike Wise, to lead tours sharing the town’s fascinating history that includes a unique geology, Civil War, and tales of the eccentric, Lord Berners, with funds going back into Faringdon community projects. The tours will be on the first Saturday of the month from April 6th at 10.30 and bookable on the Buscot & Coleshill Estate webpage.
At the Heritage & Rural Skills Centre, courses remain popular with more being added as others fill up. There are spaces on a 2-day woodcarving course with Heritage Crafts Woodworker of the year (and Coleshill resident), Tom Ball. Tom is also running letter cutting courses in wood and stone during the year. These are popular courses with discounts for under 25s.
Further afield at Chastleton, there are Behind the Scenes tours and Inspired by Chastleton. A chance to take your art materials or cameras to enjoy the stunning gardens to create and inspire your own art practice.
All events are bookable on the Buscot and Coleshill Estate webpage with courses bookable on the Heritage and Rural Skills Centre webpage.

Repair Cafe - 23/1/24
We have a very busy afternoon at Saturdays Repair cafe. A record number of fixers meant we even had to set up more tables. Big Thanks to all those fixers and volunteers who helped out on Saturday to make it a success.
In total we took in 41 items and managed to fix 24 items on the afternoon and a further 6 items were taken home for repair . That’s a 73% success rate ! In total we saved a whopping 62Kgs from landfill. Our first weighty success was getting the massive dehumidifier to work without any repairs .
I think the quirkiest repair was the mechanical turkey, it certainly raised a smile around the tables. I think our best repair for the community was a walking Aid which had a snapped steel bolt.
Looking forward to the rest of this year , we have now set the 2024 programme. Please add them to your calendar and hold the dates if you can .

What a generous community we live in.

Faringdon Repair Cafe on Saturday 26th - 30/11/23
It seemed to be a day of Hand Blenders, Computers and DVD players. The quirkiest fix has to be the untangling of a cuckoo clock. A clock with special sentimental value. It was lovely to see it untangled and working again.
We had a record of 56 items bought in for repair of which we repaired 36 items at the Cafe , 4 items were taken home for repair , so that will make a total of 40 or 71% of the items that were repaired or sharpened . We advised on a further 3 items and in total we saved 32 Kgs from landfill.
The next Repair Cafe will be on Saturday January 20th 14:00-16:00 , Stick it in your calendar now , hope you can make it .

Befriending & Volunteering at Be Free YC - 21/11/23
At Be Free Young Carers we provide vital support for young carers based in South Oxfordshire, the Vale of the White Horse, and Oxford City itself. We are currently supporting 550 young carers, but we know there is much more to be done. It is estimated that there are over 12,000 young carers in Oxfordshire alone, who are currently left isolated with very little support.
As a charity, one of our services is to provide trips to places these children would otherwise not have access to, whether that’s something big like a theme park or something small like a trip to the beach. These trips and activities are vital to provide young carers with respite from their caring role and offer a chance to make friends with other children in the same position.
We rely on volunteers to help facilitate these trips, as well as being the foundation of our befriending service. Our befrienders offer key guidance to our young carers with any struggles they are facing. Whether this is with school, caring or general anxieties. They meet once a week for 1-2-1 support, as well as doing a fun activity chosen by the young carer. We ask people for a 6-month commitment when joining us as a befriender.
If you wish to find out more about how to become a Befriender or our other volunteering opportunities, please email yc@befreeyc.org.uk or visit www.befreeyc.org.uk to find out more about our services.

Faringdon: 2, 9 and 16 December

Faringdon Folly- letters of support - 12/11/23
Letters of support REALLY help when we’re applying for funding from major funding bodies such as the Heritage Fund (National Lottery) . In fact, they INSIST on seeing evidence that the community has been consulted!
And you can help us by writing letters of support - either personal, or on behalf of a club or society or association or company or other group(s) that you belong to!
On HEADED paper is particularly effective.
Tell us in your own words what the Tower means to you - and how important it is to preserve this unique building for the generations to come!
What would Faringdon be without its iconic landmark towering over the Vale?
Does it lift the spirits when you see it in the distance as a welcoming beacon?
How important is it to the community?
Please SEND ALL LETTERS OF SUPPORT TO: follyflannery@faringdonfolly.org.uk .
Sjoerd Vogt
Thanks - 12/11/23
Many thanks to the inhabitants of Haynes Close for the pretty red cyclamen and the crosses round the memorial stone.
Much appreciated by the family.
Thank you. Dennis Haynes.
FOLLY FLANNERY - Nov 2023 - Edn 1: Issue 2- 12/11/23
Another installment of FOLLY FLANNERY - for the stories about our Fabulous Follies - the Hill & the Tower - and of course the wonderful woodland that binds them!
And here’s an interesting holistic link that Douglas Adams would have approved of. The Irishman Vincent Flannery (yes - it IS a surname, derived from the gaelic, linked to having red hair - not quite pink - but close enough) is the author of the book “FOLLY “ (nothing to do with buildings) - described on amazon (by the author himself) as “crazy slapstick nonsense” . Seriously? We’re going to have to invite him over.
Find out about, storytelling, Christmas star switch on, Woodland planting ++++ on FOLLY FLANNERY - Faringdon Folly Tower and Woodland

Our beloved Folly Tower needs your help - 11/11/23
The prevailing winds and lashing rain constantly batter the brickwork, leading to mortar erosion and water ingress - particularly on the west-facing wall. Temperature differentials and internal condensation exacerbate the problems. Structural timbers (including the stairwell!) need repairing. To cut a long story short, in 2024 we HAVE to carry out essential repairs to ensure that the problems (both internal and external) don't get worse - and the costs don't spiral even higher.
And what IS it going to cost? The total cost will be just under £350,000.
And we REALLY need your help! Yes - we're applying to many local and national funding bodies; but we ALSO need the financial support of members of the Community (not least because this also increases enormously our chances of successful applications to national funding bodies) .
SO - we'd like to focus our Community funding efforts JUST on the repointing of the brickwork! Total cost is 46K + VAT. Call it 50K as a round number.

Oxfordshire roads- Lane rental scheme - 9/11/23
We'd like to hear your views about a Lane Rental scheme we are proposing to introduce on some of Oxfordshire’s busiest roads.
We know that when companies dig up busy roads, that it can cause disruption to road users. We are proposing to introduce a scheme whereby companies are charged for works that are undertaken during peak periods.
The proposal is to introduce a scheme that will drive behavioural change in those working in the street, so less works are done at busy times or the works are done in a different way, minimising the disruption the works cause to everyone using or relying on the streets.
Background
Currently, all utility and council works undertaken in the streets of Oxfordshire are co-ordinated using a Permit Scheme that charges a fixed fee, at a maximum of £300, to only the utilities, to cover administration costs.
Proposal
Lane Rental replaces this fixed Permit Fee with a daily charge of £2,500. It is only proposed on our most critical busiest streets and is restricted to roughly 5% of all the streets in Oxfordshire, by legislation. It applies to all works in the street, not just utility works and the council’s own works, such a housing developer works.
The daily charge only applies if the works are done in a normal way at the busy times of day, such as the morning and afternoon rush hours. The daily charge will produce surplus funds which will be reinvested back into Oxfordshire.
Lane Rental schemes have been successfully introduced in other councils and the Department for Transport are encouraging councils to implement them.Have your say

Help over the winter - 3/11/23
As we move into the colder and darker months, we become acutely aware of the role we all have in looking out for vulnerable older people in our communities.
Winter can be tough at any age, but it’s particularly challenging for older people who face additional health risks, and increased feelings of loneliness and isolation. In addition, the cost-of-living crisis with rises in food and energy prices, is causing many local older people to worry about staying healthy and keeping their homes warm.
We are asking please for your support in supporting older people in Oxfordshire this winter. We have brought together some useful information and resources in the form of an online Winter Hub - please share this resource with both older people and those supporting them this winter. https://www.ageuk.org.uk/oxfordshire/about-us/winter-hub/
We are also aware that not everyone has or wants access to the internet so we have created physical Winter Wellbeing packs which we can post out to you for any older people or groups you support / connect with (photo attached of contents).

Wickesham Quarry development- 1/11/21
Our Oxford CC local Councillor has received a number of queries/comments about the proposed Wicklesham development.
Here is the official response
The proposed development at Wicklesham Quarry is a county matter by virtue of paragraph 1(1)(h) of Schedule 1 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 as amended, as the site is in its aftercare period on the previous mineral permission. It is now for the prospective applicant to submit a planning application for their proposed development to the County Council for determination. They have not yet done so although they have sought pre-application advice. As part of the pre-application stage the applicant sought an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Opinion under the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations.
Having assessed the information submitted, the County Council determined that the proposed development would not be EIA development. Based on the information presented, the County Council determined the impacts that would arise would be localised to the site and immediate surrounds and therefore not at a scale that requires an EIA process to be undertaken This included assessment of information provided by the applicant that set out how impacts on the geological SSSI would be mitigated. The Vale of White Horse also reached the same decision that the proposal would not be EIA development when they dealt with a previous screening opinion request from the applicant when they had thought the proposal was a district rather than county matter. Anybody who disagrees with the Screening Opinion can seek a Screening Direction from the Secretary of State and so this would be recourse for any party who disagrees with the decisions by both the district and county councils on this matter
Whilst it has been determined the proposed development does not require EIA, environmental impacts will of course be rigorously assessed through any future planning application by the County Council’s planning team. The application would need to be accompanied by environmental information and subject to consultation with statutory environmental bodies as well as residents and other interested parties. The application information and consultation responses will then be assessed by the planning team and a recommendation made having weighed up all the considerations, including those concerned with the environmental impacts. The planning application process will also assess the proposal against all relevant development plan policy, which will include those contained in the County Council’s Minerals and Waste Core Strategy Part 1, the Vale of White Horse Local Plan and Faringdon Neighbourhood Plan.
In summary, due process has been followed with the EIA screening process in respect of the proposed development at Wicklesham Quarry. The next step would be for a planning application to be submitted, which once received will be subject to statutory consultation and assessment against all relevant policies and material considerations that will include rigorous review of environmental and all other impacts.

New grant to help people stay warm and fed this winter - 24/10/23
A new food and warmth grant will help support people in our communities this winter who may otherwise struggle to afford essential things.
Access to nutritious food and warm homes are basic necessities – but the ongoing impact of the pandemic on people’s finances, health and wellbeing has been further heightened by the cost-of-living crisis.
Launched by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils, the grant is aimed at local voluntary and community groups, and town and parish councils, who can use it to support those most in need in the districts. Organisations can apply for grants between £2,000 to £5,000, or up to £10,000 for collaborative projects between groups of two or more organisations. The grant can fund projects providing food and warmth to people who may otherwise struggle to access these crucial essentials over the winter.
The grant can cover capital and revenue costs for projects that support people with food and warmth, such as buying food and essential supplies such as household cleaning products, toiletries, hot water bottles and blankets and cooking equipment such as saucepans and slow cookers. Projects might also include cooking clubs, gardening clubs and educational activities that promote healthy food choices and saving energy.
The grant scheme opened week commencing 23 October 2023 and closes at midday 27 November 2023. Decisions are expected to be made within four weeks.
Support is also available through the councils’ Community Hub. If you need support, call our friendly Community Hub Team during office hours on 01235 422600 (option 3) or email communitysupport@southandvale.gov.uk
For more information on the grant and details on how to apply go to our website South / Vale
About the grant:
The grant is funded by the government’s Containment Outbreak Management Fund (COMF) which was launched in December 2020 to fund the implementation of local authority public health measures which aimed to support the proactive containment and intervention to reduce COVID-19 outbreak and spread of infection.
South Oxfordshire and Vale of the White Horse district councils continue to fund a variety of initiatives in support of the aims of the COMF. On 21 September 2023 the councils approved the allocation of COMF for a voluntary sector organisation grant for projects that mitigate against the public health impact of lack of access to warm homes and food.
About the Community Hub:
The councils are funding the Community Hub for a further two years to help people as much as possible with the rising cost-of-living. Originally set up in response to the pandemic, the Community Hub now provides ongoing practical support, advice and funding to the district’s most vulnerable residents. It plays an important role supporting the council’s ongoing response work for refugees and asylum seekers in the district and works with partners to lead and deliver programmes to address inequalities. The Community Hub delivers cost-of-living help for those in most financial need.

Concert by the Torriano Ensemble in St. Mary’s Church, Longcot- 8/10/23
On Sunday 19th November at 6 pm the Torriano Ensemble is delighted to be returning to St. Mary’s Church, Longcot
for an evening of music for flute, clarinet, bassoon, horn and string quintet.
The programme features two much-loved masterpieces from the classical period, Mozart’s charming and effortlessly melodious Flute Quartet in D major K. 285 and the magnificent Octet by Schubert. It is thought that Schubert heard Beethoven’s Septet and was inspired to write a similar work of his own, and indeed there are many similarities of structure and style between the two pieces.
Arrangements of three of Gershwin’s most popular songs, ‘Embraceable You’, ‘The Man I Love’ and ‘I’ve Got Rhythm’, provide a contrast of style and mood.
The bar will be open from 5.30 pm and at the interval.
As always, admission is free with a retiring collection, and all seats should be reserved in advance by emailing victorialmedcalf@gmail.com
All donations will go to Longcot Village Trust and St. Mary’s Church.
